Open Rehearsal (in search of additional dancers)

The Wake Project has just been accepted to present a full-hour long show at the 11th Annual Greensboro Fringe Festival Jan.31st, Feb 1st and 2nd, and we are in need of some additional dancers.  On Friday, Nov. 2nd, The Wake Project will be hosting an Open Rehearsal to help in that search.  An open rehearsal gives both dancer and choreographer a chance to evaluate the workability for both parties.  Please contact Camerin at thewakeproject@gmail.com for more information.

Open Rehearsal:

Friday Nov. 2nd from 4:30-7pm

Aris' Heart Studio 1609 Nassau Blvd. Charlotte NC

Belk Charity Sale

Dear Friends and Dance-Supporters,

The Wake Project is proud to be a part of the Belk Charity Sale on November 3rd, 2012. Proceeds will benefit The KinetiCollective, a subsidiary group of Martha Connerton/ Kinetic Works, formed to bring dancers together as a network community for growth both within the Charlotte dance-arts, as well as, our growing outreach to our many audiences.
The Belk Charity Sale is one of two sales a year that Belk holds to donate money to different local charities and non-profit organizations. The KinetiCollective is using the money raised from the Belk Charity Sale in order to help fund their upcoming dance concert to be held March 15 – 17 at Actor’s Theater of Charlotte. The local-based companies collaborating on this event are: Echo Contemporary Dance Company, Kinetic Works, Streamline Movements, THE MARK, The Wake Project, and Open Door Studios.
How the Sale Works:
1.     Belk is offering a one day charity sale on Saturday, November 3rd from 6 - 10am (this happens before store hours normally open).

2.     Customers can ONLY  get into this special event with a purchased ticket (tickets are $5 and all money from these tickets go to the designated non-profit organizations who are selling them).

3.     The KinetiCollective will receive 100% percent of the money for tickets sold by our company members (prior to November 3rd).

4.     Customers who purchase these tickets not only get into this special event, but are also given back a re-fund of the $5 when presenting their ticket and paying for their items at the register (so basically, by purchasing the tickets the customer is “fronting” the money ahead of time and if they don’t go to the sale, or don’t buy anything, they are out that $5. But, if they do go to the sale and do purchase items then it is actually Belk who is donating the $5 to our organization).

Incentives for Customers to Buy Tickets:
1.     Entrance into special sale.

2.     There is a FREE gift card to the first 100 costumers at each store location (gift cards will range from $5 -$1,000).

3.     Every single item in all Belk stores (excluding Fragrances and Cosmetics) is 20%-70% off. This includes all specialty never-on-sale items. Red Dot items will be 45% - 75% off.

4.     Customers can earn Double their rewards points with the use of their Belk Rewards/Premier cards, or Triple their points with their Elite Card.

How to Purchase Tickets (Please, choose one of the following choices):
1.     Contact Camerin Watson at thewakeproject@gmail.com

The Belk Charity Sale is really a wonderful opportunity, not only for the organizations that are being donated to, but also for the vast amount of customers who will be getting such special limited sales just in time for the start of Christmas holiday shopping!

Thank you for all of your support and we hope to see you at our spring concert!

Take Class with Camerin Allgood McKinnon

Camerin Allgood McKinnon, artistic director of The Wake Project is teaching adult modern classes at Open Door Studios for the fall semester.  Camerin teaches Safety Release Technique which was created by BJ Sullivan, who is currently a professor at UNCG.

"Safety Release Technique combines the health practicalities of human movement with the breadth and depth of artistic possibility. SRT skillfully blends multiple layers of movement principles while informing dancing with a mixture of somatic and release applications."- BJ Sullivan

Classes begin on the floor developing core strength and ideas of circularity and continuous flow, and slowly move to standing and phrase work.  In addition to teaching a technique class, Camerin believes in offering opportunities for students to be artists playing with phrase work and music.

Shin length or longer pants and long sleeved shirts are recommended to protect the skin from the floor.

Classes:
Tuesdays: 10-11:30am
Wednesdays:  7:30- 8:45pm
Class is $15/ $10 for professional dancers/ discount available with the purchase of a class card

The Process Part 1

You are cordially invited to join me on the journey of creation for my newest work. So new it doesn't even have a title yet. This new untitled work will premiere on May 5th on the Tennis Courts as part of the Midwood Mania Festival in the Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte NC. I am inviting you to partake in more that just a viewing of the final work but in the whole process leading up to May 5th. This work is being supported by a grant from the Arts and Science Council. This is my first grant and I am very excited. I am working as part of the KinetiCollective and choreographer Sarah Barnard and I wrote the grant, with much assistance from Martha Connerton, and are both choreographing works for the 1st ever Tennis Court Dance at the Midwood Mania Festival. We received $2,000 which has to be matched by indivdual donations and raised funds. To donate: http://www.mckineticworks.or/kcollectiveprojects.php

We held auditions March 15th and 16th with a nice turn out and I had my first rehearsal last night. Though I must admit I've been working on the ideas for the piece since last Fall.
I am excited for you to join me on this journey and I hope you'll tune back in regularly to check on the progress. Let The Process begin:

Step 1: Generating Movement- The clip is of some contact improvisation that company member Amber Debnam and I played with back in the Fall. We knew this piece was going to include a lot of partner work so contact seemed like the most logical starting place. However, as we found out perhaps Lady Gaga is not effective music for serious exploration. Despite all of our fun some of this movement inspired phrase work that I am using to create the piece. Please feel free to comment. Enjoy!

In a moment

It wasn't a moment for everyone. For some of us it was a gradual understanding that seeped into us before we were aware of it's power, before the beginning of our memories. For some of us it seems that we always knew. For others of us we were hit by a bolt of painful lightening at some early stage in our lives. But we were all born in perfect ignorance without any knowledge of race. Race is not often something someone sat us down to explain guiding us toward to healthy understanding, but something that becomes part of our consciousness over time or through one major event that opens our eyes to the simple fact that in America people are treated differently based on the color of their skin.
This weekend I am premiering a dance piece entitled: "Stir". The work looks at early understanding of race, single moments or memories of awareness that changed the course of our lives and social understanding and beyond that consciousness to our actions upon awareness. The work begs the question, What do we do with racial awareness?, How do we choose to respond to those who are different from ourselves?

I am a founding member of the KinetiCollective, our first annual show is this weekend: March 9-11th

Show: WeAreHereWeAre
Date and Time: Friday and Saturday 8pm, Sunday at 2pm
Location: Actors Theater, 650 Stonewall Street, Charlotte NC
Tickets: In advance $10- $15 at http://www.mckineticworks.org/kineticevents.php

I hope you can make it!!!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Premiering this weekend (3/9-11 2012): "Stir" a new trio choreographed by Camerin Allgood McKinnon, performed by: Camerin Allgood McKinnon, Amber Debname, and Arlynn Zachery. The new piece will be premiered as part of the KinetiCollective show: WeAreHereWeAre.
Shows:
Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm
Actors Theater: 650 Stonewall St. Charlotte NC
Tickets (cheaper by Thursday online): http://www.mckineticworks.org/kineticevents.php

"Stir" is about that moment when we each individually became aware that race plays a part in our lives and in our society- and then what do we do with that new awareness. I collected stories from a diverse group of people about when in their lives they became aware of race and then my wonderful fiance created a sound score out of the recorded stories.
